Job Description

Role Synopsis

bp is reinventing itself and digital capability is at the core of this vision. As a DevOps Engineer, you are a digital expert bringing deep specialist expertise to bp. DevOps Engineers work on the strategic technology platforms we exploit from the market or come with deep skills in the implementation and integration of market solutions into our overall technology landscape.  You will bring a broad base of Digital technical knowledge and a strong understanding of software delivery principles. You will be familiar with leading teams using lifecycle methods, with Agile delivery and the DevOps approach at the core.  You will be skilled in the application of approaches such as Site Reliability Engineering in the delivery and operation of the technologies you deliver, working as part of multi-disciplinary squads.

bp operates a discipline-based organization and DevOps Engineers may be deployed to work in different areas of our business over time based on your skills and experience and the business adoption of technology. With your technology specialist skills, you will bring transferable skills which will allow you to support immediate business demand, and to grow your skills over time.

bp designs, builds, and operate platform products, services and underpinning tools stacks to support the developers in being more productive. These include CICD and Repo technology and the closely coupled ecosystem of technology so that we can deliver safe, compliant, and reliable digital products at scale with reduced friction. These engineers are tasked with helping teams adopt these modern ways of working and providing the tools and services they need to support them in this endeavor, reducing the cognitive load as much as possible.

As a DevOps Engineer, you will be responsible for ensuring the smooth operation of software development and deployment pipelines. You will collaborate closely with development, QA, and operations teams to implement and maintain robust CI/CD processes, infrastructure automation, and monitoring systems that support scalable and reliable software delivery.

Key Accountabilities

  • Work as part of evolving multi-disciplinary teams which may include Software Engineers, Enterprise Technology Engineers, Designers, SecOps, and Product owners to deliver value through the application of specialist skills.
  • Support recommendation of the correct strategic platforms to solve a problem based on business requirements using your expertise.
  • Work with vendors and partners providing market solutions to optimize the usage and value which can be delivered from the appropriate technology platform.
  • Act as a thought leader in the areas of your technology specialism helping to shape forward roadmaps, upcoming features and opportunities to unlock future benefits.
  • Ensure operational integrity of what you build, assuring operational compliance with architectural and security standards, as well as compliance and policy controls refined by Strategy.
  • Mentor others and become a conduit to connect the broader organization.
  • Develop and maintain automated infrastructure scripts and tooling that enable efficient and agile development processes. This includes automating deployments, building and testing code, and ensuring that infrastructure is secure, reliable, and scalable. Result: Efficient and reliable infrastructure that supports rapid and continuous deployment of code changes.
  • Establish and maintain continuous integration and delivery pipelines to enable faster and more frequent delivery of code changes to production. This includes building and testing code, automating deployments, and monitoring the health of applications in production. Result: Rapid and consistent delivery of high-quality code changes to production.
  • Manage and optimize cloud infrastructure to ensure that it is cost-effective, secure, and reliable. This includes monitoring and configuring cloud resources such as EC2 instances, S3 buckets, and RDS databases. Result: Cost-effective and reliable cloud infrastructure that supports the needs of the business.
  • Implement and maintain monitoring and alerting tools to ensure that systems are running smoothly and that any issues are detected and resolved quickly. This includes setting up dashboards, creating alerts, and analyzing system logs and metrics. Result: Smooth running systems with minimal downtime, and quick resolution of any issues that arise.
  • Collaborate closely with development teams to ensure that the DevOps tools and processes are aligned with the needs of the business. This includes troubleshooting issues and providing guidance on best practices for using DevOps tools and processes. Result: Effective collaboration that ensures DevOps tools and processes meet the needs of the business and support the successful delivery of software projects.
  • Develop and maintain documentation for DevOps processes, procedures, and standards. Deliver training programs to ensure that developers and other stakeholders understand how to use the DevOps tools and processes effectively. Result: Clear and accessible documentation that supports effective use of DevOps tools and processes across the organization, leading to more successful software projects.

Essential Education

The following essential education would be preferred or equivalent demonstrable professional experience:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field. This formal education provides a solid foundation in computer science theory, software engineering principles, and system architecture design.
  • Technical certifications such as Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA), Amazon Web Services (AWS) Certified DevOps Engineer, or Microsoft Certified: Azure DevOps Engineer Expert. These certifications demonstrate expertise in specific areas of DevOps such as cloud computing, container orchestration, and infrastructure automation.
  • Membership in a technical or professional body such as the DevOps Institute or the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). These memberships can demonstrate a commitment to ongoing learning and professional development in the field of DevOps.
  • Participation in relevant technical conferences or training programs. These can help to keep skills and knowledge up to date with the latest trends and technologies in DevOps.
  • Overall, the essential education for a DevOps Engineer is a combination of formal education, technical certifications, and ongoing professional development to stay current in the rapidly evolving field of DevOps.

Essential Experience

  • Seasoned experience in technology specialism.
  • Demonstrable Knowledge in the application of modern Service Delivery methods - Site Reliability Engineering to traditional ITIL and understanding of Product Based delivery.
  • Strong Communications skills and a high ‘EQ’ with the ability to operate across complex business environments and stakeholders up to senior executive level.
  • Knowledge of cloud infrastructure and services: A DevOps Engineer should have a deep understanding of cloud infrastructure and services, particularly in Azure and AWS environments. This includes knowledge of virtual machines, load balancers, databases, storage, networking, and security.
  • Experience with infrastructure automation: A DevOps Engineer should have experience with infrastructure automation using tools such as Terraform or CloudFormation, and configuration management tools such as Ansible or Chef.
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines: A DevOps Engineer should have experience with setting up and managing CI/CD pipelines using tools such as Azure DevOps (ADO), Jenkins or GitLab.
  • Familiarity with containerization: A DevOps Engineer should have experience with containerization technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes and be able to manage container orchestration in the cloud.
  • Knowledge of monitoring and logging tools: A DevOps Engineer should have experience with monitoring and logging tools such as Azure Monitor, AWS CloudWatch, or ELK stack.
  • Experience with scripting and programming languages: A DevOps Engineer should have experience with scripting languages such as PowerShell and Bash, as well as programming languages such as Python and Java.
  • Strong problem-solving skills: A DevOps Engineer should have strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to troubleshoot complex issues and come up with creative solutions.
  • Collaboration and communication skills: A DevOps Engineer should have strong collaboration and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams and stakeholders across the organization.
  • Understanding of security best practices: A DevOps Engineer should have an understanding of security best practices in the cloud and be able to implement security controls such as network security groups, firewalls, and identity and access management.

Overall, we expect a DevOps Engineer in Azure and AWS cloud environments to have a mix of technical skills, such as knowledge of cloud infrastructure and services, containerization, and infrastructure automation, as well as soft skills such as problem-solving, collaboration, and communication.

Desirable Criteria

  • Broad development experience in one or more object-oriented programming languages (e.g. C#, Java, Python).
  • Strong relational database experience using MS SQL Server Experience with SSIS, SSRS, SSAS or similar BI development and reporting tools.
  • Broad experience contributing and collaborating to assist design, plan, implement, maintain, and document services and solutions.
  • Strong competency in software development tools (e.g. Visual Studio, VS Code, Chrome Dev Tools).
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
  • Expertise in Large Language Models (LLMs) and techniques for LLM alignment and fine-tuning for developing and deploying AI agents and applications.

  • Technical Specialism - The development and exploitation of expertise in any specific area of information or communications technology, technique, method, product or application area.
  • Configuration management and release - The lifecycle planning, control and management of the assets of an organization (such as documentation, software and service assets, including information relating to those assets and their relationships. This involves identification, classification and specification of all configuration items (CIs) and the interfaces to other processes and data.
  • Documentation and knowledge sharing - The systematic management of vital knowledge to create value for the organization by capturing, sharing, developing and exploiting the collective knowledge of the organization to improve performance, support decision making and mitigate risks. The development of a supportive and collaborative knowledge sharing culture to drive the successful adoption of technology solutions for knowledge management. Providing access to informal, tacit knowledge as well as formal, documented, explicit knowledge by facilitating internal and external collaboration and communications.
  • Information security - The selection, design, justification, implementation and operation of controls and management strategies to maintain the security, confidentiality, integrity, availability, accountability and relevant compliance of information systems with legislation, regulation and relevant standards.
  • Metrics definition and Instrumentation - The development and operation of a measurement capability to support agreed organizational information needs. The planning, implementation, and control of activities to measure attributes of processes, products, and services in order to assess performance, progress, and provide indications and insights into actual or potential problems, issues, and risks.
  • Service operations and resiliency - The ability to build and operate services and applications at scale with automation to maintain high levels of availability. To do this, a combination of activities is required from the initial design and sizing of the infrastructure, network, and constituent components to determine throughput (# of transactions/requests, users) through to service health metrics, monitoring, alarming, and remediation. Each of these areas will combine human effort (e.g., a human is paged) as well as automated steps and tools to reduce operational burden and overhead.
  • Source control and code management - The practice of tracking and managing changes to code to help to resolve conflicts when merging contributions from multiple sources. This includes the use of best practices such as using pull requests and trunk-based development, running automated testing and static analysis pre-commit, and preventing build breaks through automation/rollbacks.
  • Testing and Quality Assurance - Measure and maintain a high level of code quality from development through deployment to production. This includes automated and manual testing, including but not limited to: unit testing, static analysis, functional testing, UI testing, load testing, chaos testing. Testing should be done throughout the development lifecycle (agile) rather than being reserved for a specific milestone (waterfall).
  • Coaching - Uses a blend of formal and informal coaching to build the capability of the team to ensure that performance delivery is sustainable in the longer term and the team are motivated to continue to develop their capabilities.
  • Collaboration - The ability to collaborate with teams internally and externally to drive activities that support the wider bp strategy. Collaborative leaders enable and empower others to cooperate willingly to achieve positive results. They navigate a varied network of people, inside and outside of bp, to gain insight and ideas.   • Facilitation - Facilitates learning, group activities and group discussions. Uses a range of techniques to guide group sessions to appropriate and useful outcomes, in a constructive and timely manner

The following certifications would be desirable:

  • Microsoft Certified: Azure DevOps Engineer Expert - This certification validates skills in designing and implementing DevOps practices for Azure.
  • AWS Certified DevOps Engineer - Professional - This certification validates skills in provisioning, operating, and managing distributed application systems on the AWS platform.
  • AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Professional - This certification validates skills in designing and deploying scalable, highly available, and fault-tolerant systems on the AWS platform.
  • Microsoft Certified: Azure Solutions Architect Expert - This certification validates skills in designing and implementing solutions that run on Azure.
  • Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA) - This certification validates skills in managing and deploying applications on Kubernetes.
  • Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE) - This certification validates skills in Linux administration, including shell scripting and automation.

These certifications demonstrate expertise and proficiency in cloud infrastructure and services, containerization, DevOps practices, and security best practices. While these certifications are desirable, it's important to note that they should not be the only criteria for evaluating a candidate's qualifications. Real-world experience, problem-solving skills, and communication abilities are also critical for success in this role.
