Job Description

The Engineering & Maintenance Manager holds accountability for engineering integrity across the Mechanical and Electrical & Instrumentation areas, ensuring compliance with all legislative, company, and site requirements. As custodian of core engineering systems, standards, processes, and procedures, the role holder sets policy and provides technical assurance across the site.

The person will support the day to day the engineering strategy, modifications and reliability improvements on all operational assets (pilot plants through to lab scale equipment). Support the development and delivery of capital projects as required, ensuring compliance with mechanical engineering standards across the Fuel & Low Carbon Technology, Oil & Gas Technology and Wells Fluid teams. The post holder also manages several teams with various functional responsibilities across the site.

We lead scientific innovation right through the lifecycle - from research, product development, demonstration, technical scale-up, commercialization and support for users in the real world.

Job purpose and primary objectives:

This role plays a key part in the assurance of mechanical, electrical and instrument engineering within an R&D business and will provide oversight and verification of the standardised engineering delivery and detailed engineering solutions.

The role will also provide operational line technical query support to the operating teams across our global operating sites.

Success is developing and assuring our inherently safer design, safe systems of work, whilst facing the challenges of a research, development and technology driven business.

Key Activities:

  • Lead safe, reliable, and effective execution of engineering and maintenance activities across research equipment and infrastructure, ensuring full compliance with legislative, commercial, and business requirements.

  • Ensure delivery in line with bp operating standards and engineering technical practices.

  • Support bp’s operational team to effectively minimise downtime and optimise the laboratory, pilot plants, & refineries availability.

  • Provide leadership, guidance, and technical assurance for all significant activities, including outages, pilot plant shutdowns, and planned and unplanned events; lead incident management throughout the full lifecycle.

  • Ensure appropriate discipline expertise (E&I, Mechanical, Process) is available to meet the technical needs, sourced as required.

  • Develop, implement, and maintain maintenance and emergency response procedures in alignment with bp standards.

  • Review, monitor, and continuously improve Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) strategies, delivering performance improvements and cost efficiencies.

  • Optimise spare parts strategies with focus on asset lifecycle management, obsolescence, and bp strategic spares, ensuring safe and secure storage.

  • Own and maintain the asset register, clearly identifying and managing safety‑critical equipment.

  • Ensure all maintenance and engineering goods and services are competitively tendered and delivered in the most cost‑effective manner, in accordance with bp procurement requirements.

  • Actively contribute to cross‑site and cross‑discipline working groups, supporting the sharing of good practices across departments and sites.

  • Lead design review and technical assurance during procurement of small to medium‑scale laboratory research equipment.

  • Lead delivery of assigned research programmes and capital projects through robust Management of Change, ensuring controlled development and application of site technical specifications, policies, and procedures appropriate to laboratories.

  • Represent the Engineering & Maintenance Manager role professionally, completing mandatory self‑development and driving compliance and assurance to bp engineering standards and technical practices.

  • Lead Management of Change (MOC) activities and contribute to Process Safety Reviews (PSR), HAZOPs and HAZIDs, providing SME input, assurance, and effective challenge to risk management processes.

  • Ensure appropriate selection of system components, confirming material and chemical compatibility for unit operating conditions.

  • Assure pressure vessel design, inspection and testing regimes, including code compliance and technical analysis.

  • Deliver risk‑based assurance for safety‑critical equipment, supporting development and execution of planned preventative maintenance strategies. Ensure mechanical and pressure systems are maintained to enable safe, reliable, and efficient operations.

  • Provide technical assurance of third‑party engineering and design proposals.

  • Support laboratory system design, development and analysis through application of engineering judgment and operational experience.

  • Maintain compliance with Engineering Technical Practices and develop Site Technical Practices where required.

  • Provide assurance of the technical integrity of mechanical systems. Actively create and participate in the review of Piping & Instrument Diagrams (P&IDs) and Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs).

Required qualifications and experience include:

  • Bachelor’s and/or master’s degree in engineering or related discipline relevant to mechanical engineering.

  • 10+ years’ experience with Operations and Maintenance of mechanical systems

  • Good working knowledge of relevant industry codes and standards, including ASME Section VIII, ASME B31.4, API 600, and API 6D, together with applicable regulatory frameworks such as India’s Factories Act (1948), Environment (Protection) Act (1986), Oil Industry Safety Directorate (OISD) requirements, UK HSE standards, and US BSEE and EPA regulations.

  • Strong leadership skills, ability to influence and drive decisions.

  • Fluent written and spoken English language.

  • Good communicator, able to technically address with conviction verbally and written across Projects and Operations on technical matters at all levels of the company.

  • Able to demonstrate pragmatism when balancing technical decisions and operational needs (deliver safe & competitive solutions).

Desirable criteria and qualifications

  • Professional Engineer and/or Chartered Engineer status

  • More than 5 years experience of research and development scale projects

  • Knowledge and experience of laboratory scale equipment and gas systems.

  • Working knowledge with relevant ASME, ISO and API standards

  • Experience with RCFA investigations

  • Experience with HAZOP/HAZID, Process Safety Reviews and risk assessments

  • Experience of working across different cultures, supporting different operating regions and engaging with a wide variety of customers or suppliers.
