Ilius, a petrophysicist in bp’s Technical Solutions India, Pune, shares how subsurface work connects data to decisions shaping energy projects.
Ilius is a petrophysicist in bp’s Technical Solutions India (TSI) team, based in Pune. Working across global subsurface projects, the role focuses on turning data into insights that support real decisions. We asked him about his role, how his career has developed and what it’s really like to work at bp.
After my first espresso with a pinch of sugar, I start by listing everything that needs attention for the day and reviewing meetings across time zones. From there, the focus shifts into subsurface problem-solving.
Most of my work involves analyzing petrophysical data, building models and supporting integrated reservoir studies where geoscience and engineering come together. Over time, this has taken me across projects ranging from low-carbon initiatives to oil and gas fields in Indonesia, Egypt, Trinidad and Azerbaijan.
What I enjoy most is the point where scattered data begins to form a coherent story – that transition from uncertainty to clarity is what keeps the work engaging.
My role is a mix of technical, analytical and collaborative work. A large part of my time is spent on petrophysical interpretation and reservoir characterization, alongside planning data acquisition and evaluating uncertainties.
Working closely with geologists, reservoir engineers, geophysicists and drilling engineers is equally important. Subsurface work is highly integrated. Geologists explain how rocks are formed, while petrophysicists quantify what they contain and how they behave.
The best outcomes come from bringing these perspectives together across geology, petrophysics, geophysics and engineering – that combination of science and real-world impact is what makes the work fulfilling.
One project I’m particularly proud of involved an infrastructure-led exploration opportunity in Trinidad, where petrophysical insights helped unlock significant gas potential and inform key business decisions.
More recently, I’ve supported reservoir modelling for a giant oil field, contributing to understanding long-term production trends and helping guide future development planning for a major producing asset.
One aspect I value is the early exposure and trust provided. I’ve had the opportunity to work across regions, asset types and technical areas, which has accelerated my learning.
This is combined with structured training in subsurface workflows and advanced computational techniques. Working with subject matter experts on integrated reservoir modelling, nuclear magnetic resonance and resistivity modelling using high-performance computing has also strengthened my technical foundation.
In my experience, there is a genuine culture of people wanting each other to succeed. Even with globally distributed teams, there’s a strong sense of connection and shared purpose.
People are encouraged to share ideas, ask questions and challenge constructively in day-to-day work. At the same time, hybrid working help people balance delivery with personal wellbeing.
TSI offers a wide range of opportunities, from traditional subsurface work to low-carbon projects, digital integration, mentoring and industry engagement.
It allows people to explore different paths rather than stay in a fixed role. Over time, I’ve also been able to build skills beyond technical expertise, including collaboration, mentoring and leadership.
