Ranjit, a data operations lead in Pune, India, shares how vendor master data supports payments, compliance and global onboarding at bp.
A typical day in vendor master data management starts with aligning daily operations and reviewing incoming vendor requests. I focus on priorities that impact business transactions, such as onboarding or payments, ensuring delivery remains aligned to service level agreements.
Vendor master data sits at the heart of bp’s procurement, finance and compliance processes. The most tangible impact is ensuring vendors are created and maintained accurately, which reduces invoice blocks, payment delays, reporting inaccuracies and regulatory exposure.
My responsibilities are split between operations oversight and stakeholder management. In simple terms, my work helps bp operate faster, pay suppliers correctly and trust its data, enabling the wider business to focus on value rather than fixing preventable data issues.
I’d say the Appian customer onboarding process. We moved from more manual ways of working into a single platform where onboarding requests could be submitted, tracked and managed in one place. Insights from onboarding data issues led to rule changes that reduced delays and enabled the solution to scale globally with confidence. The process now has better visibility, built-in checks and less back-and-forth. That’s when I realised my work was influencing real business decisions.
Through a strong mix of structured learning and hands-on experience. Role-based operations training and Appian onboarding enablement were particularly impactful, helping me understand how data, governance and digital workflows come together. Applying this learning in live onboarding scenarios shifted my perspective from execution to designing scalable, global solutions.
bp’s culture is built around respect, inclusion and teamwork. In data operations, regular alignment forums encourage open communication and support during high-pressure work. I feel respected because speaking up is encouraged and different perspectives are genuinely valued. bp’s strong focus on psychological safety and inclusion helps me feel trusted, supported and part of a truly collaborative team.
bp has given me strong global exposure through my role in the global vendor master data team. I work closely with colleagues across the UK, Europe, Asia and the Americas, coordinating daily business as usual and urgent requests through regular global forums. This role has deepened my understanding of regional regulatory and operational differences, while building strong cross-cultural collaboration and stakeholder management skills.
The bp benefits I most value are the strong focus on wellbeing and support programmes such as the employee assistance programme, Headspace and the thrive@bp wellbeing portal and resource hub. These help me with work-life balance, resilience and performance, which are important in a fast-paced, global role.
How deeply bp’s values are lived day to day. Inclusion, speaking up and being ‘one team’ aren’t just policies – they genuinely guide decisions and behaviours. The strong focus on psychological safety and ethical accountability is powerful and not always visible from the outside, but it truly defines working here.
My top tip is to ask questions early and speak up. bp genuinely encourages curiosity and learning, and the ‘one team’ culture means you’re never expected to figure everything out alone. Engage with people, understand the bigger picture and share ideas or concerns confidently – you’ll grow faster and make a real impact.
Questions and answers
The role involves monitoring and processing treasury and trade transactions, resolving exceptions and completing reporting accurately and on time. Early on, this may include shadowing teams and learning workflows during a transition phase. As understanding builds, responsibility increases to support work across regions.
New joiners are often learning complex processes while working with experienced colleagues. Teams share knowledge openly and answer questions, especially during onboarding and transition periods. This approach helps people build confidence while getting familiar with their role.
Curiosity, adaptability and attention to detail are important when working across connected financial processes. Being proactive, asking questions and working collaboratively helps build understanding and supports effective performance over time.
