Growing in finance – Luca’s story
Luca, an ancillary senior negotiator at bp Hungary, shares how hybrid working, career mobility and global work have shaped her career so far.
Luca, Ancillary senior negotiator in Hungary

Luca is an ancillary senior negotiator in finance as part of bp Hungary’s finance, business & technology (FBT) global centre. Based in Budapest, Luca has been at bp for over four years. We asked her about her career journey – from intern to senior negotiator – and what it’s like working here.

What do you do at bp, and what does your role involve?

I manage and negotiate shipping related and ancillary costs, including freight, port, pipeline and detention charges. I handle claims from start to finish – reviewing contracts, calculating costs, negotiating with third parties and closing claims on time.
I work closely with traders, operators, settlement teams and external partners to reduce financial risk, prevent future claims and make sure costs are allocated correctly, so trading results are accurate.

What are the top two benefits of working at bp for you?

I really appreciate the opportunity to grow and explore new career paths within the company. Since joining bp, I have had the chance to move between different roles and keep learning. It’s reassuring to know that, at bp, you don’t have to leave the company to try something completely new.
Another big plus is flexibility and work-life balance. The hybrid setup works really well for me – I enjoy having some days at home, while still coming into the office to connect with colleagues. The Budapest office is modern and designed to make collaboration easy, and that really helps me feel part of a community.

How has bp supported your wellbeing and made you feel valued?

bp’s hybrid way of working has really supported my wellbeing. It gives me a balance of office time and remote work, helping me stay connected while also having space to focus when needed.
My managers and colleagues have always been kind, helpful and understanding. That creates a positive atmosphere, helps keep stress levels low and means I feel supported and valued.

How has bp helped you learn and grow professionally?

I started at bp as an intern during university. Being hired full-time into the credit department was a major milestone for me. After that, I moved into a more complex role in the same area, which helped me develop further.
Later, I made a significant shift into a completely different area within supply, trading and shipping. Now I negotiate costs for large tanker vessels – a unique and exciting challenge. I’ve developed new skills, learned a lot and I’m motivated by the opportunities for continued growth within this team.

What advice would you give to someone starting their career at bp?

Take advantage of the learning opportunities and don’t hesitate to ask questions. Be open to exploring – bp has a wide range of roles and teams, so don’t be afraid to try something new, even if it feels outside your comfort zone.
