Jasmine, a geologist in bp’s Technical Solutions India team, shares how subsurface work supports subsurface interpretation and development decisions.
Jasmine is a geologist in bp’s Technical Solutions India (TSI) team, based in Pune. Working as part of integrated field development squads, her role focuses on subsurface interpretation and supporting field development decisions. Here, she shares what her work involves, the projects she’s been part of and what it’s like working at bp.
As a development geologist working in integrated field development squads, my day involves subsurface interpretation and opportunity screening, alongside regular input from multidisciplinary teams as development concepts take shape.
A large part of my time is spent on static support and subsurface evaluation work, including seismic interpretation, probabilistic volume estimation and uncertainty assessment. I also work on screening development opportunities and well concepts, as well as building integrated development scenarios and supporting economic evaluations such as development‑cost analysis.
A significant portion of my time is spent on technical analysis and problem‑solving, including static evaluations, seismic interpretation and volumetric analysis.
Another major part involves planning and maturation activities, such as identifying data gaps and assessing risks and uncertainties, which then feed into forward plans. This sits alongside working with reservoir, subsea, wells and finance teams to develop development scenarios.
One project I’m particularly proud to be part of was the West Nile Delta Tie‑back squad. I contributed to reassessing the deepwater natural gas field Hodoa discovery, which had previously been considered uneconomic.
Through integrated work across disciplines, we identified potential in a combined development scenario with the Ghorab exploration target, enabling cost‑sharing and improving overall project economics. It was rewarding to be part of a project where technical reassessment helped unlock new potential from an existing discovery.
Working closely with senior geologists and subject matter experts has been a major part of my learning. I’ve also taken part in geology‑focused technical training and field learning, which helped connect technical concepts with real geological observations.
Being part of integrated squad work has also provided exposure beyond core interpretation, including opportunity screening, development scenario generation, uncertainty management and development‑cost discussions.
One aspect I value is how strongly the culture reflects bp’s ‘Care for Others’ belief. I’ve experienced a high level of support from leadership and team members, both in my professional development and during difficult personal situations.
People share knowledge and support each other, and there’s a real effort to make time to listen. There’s also a strong focus on continuous learning, alongside flexibility that helps balance work and wellbeing.
I’ve worked on projects across many regions, collaborating with teams in the US, UK, Egypt and Trinidad & Tobago.
This exposure has helped me feel more confident contributing to technical discussions, manage stakeholder expectations and adjust how I work depending on the team or context.
bp TSI offers strong scope for technical learning and multidisciplinary exposure across different geological settings and teams.
I’ve felt supported by leadership and colleagues, both in my development and during personal situations. The experience has helped me build confidence and take ownership, particularly in situations where I’m expected to contribute ideas in complex projects.
