Timothy – portfolio management lead – bp Malaysia

Timothy is a portfolio management lead in bp Malaysia, part of the finance, business & technology function. Based in Kuala Lumpur, he works across credit risk, governance and reporting, helping provide leadership with greater visibility of portfolio exposures. We asked him about his role, working with global teams and the projects he's most proud of.

What does a day in the life of a portfolio management lead look like?

A typical day involves balancing real-time portfolio oversight with longer-term governance and control improvement.

A large part of my time involves monitoring credit exposures that have breached limits, reviewing material breaches and ensuring issues are investigated, escalated and tracked through to resolution.

I also work closely with teams including credit advisory, data & analytics, trade finance, operators and settlements to improve reporting quality and resolve data inconsistencies.

What do you enjoy most about your role?

What I enjoy most is the analytical and problem-solving aspects. I like identifying the root cause of an issue, translating complexity into clear insights for stakeholders and helping move the team towards more proactive and forward-looking risk management.

How do you personally connect your work to bp’s wider goals?

I help ensure that portfolio credit risks are clearly identified, understood and proactively managed through structured, audit-ready frameworks. My role directly supports stronger risk governance, better capital protection and more informed decision-making across the business.

How have you grown professionally at bp?

I have been given the trust and opportunity to take ownership of key initiatives and translate leadership expectations into practical ways of working.

For example, one of my biggest stretch moments was leading the development of the excess management standard operating procedure while embedding the weekly material excess reporting process.

While there was clear leadership direction, some of the initial requirements were somewhat ambiguous. This meant aligning multiple stakeholders, interpreting expectations and balancing auditability with practical day-to-day execution.

What kind of international exposure do you get in your role?

bp has opened doors to global connections by placing the portfolio function at the intersection of multiple regions, functions and stakeholders. I regularly work with teams across London, Singapore and other regional offices.

A key element of this comes from supporting credit leadership team reporting and governance frameworks, where the work we produce feeds into senior leadership discussions that span the global portfolio.

How would you describe bp’s culture?

The culture encourages being inclusive, open to feedback and prioritising team objectives over individual agendas. There is a clear emphasis on collaboration and a ‘one team’ mindset, where success is not viewed in silos but as a collective outcome.

What advice would you give someone starting at bp?

Focus on understanding how bp operates and build a strong foundation in key processes, systems and risk frameworks.

It's also important to invest time in stakeholder relationships and maintain a proactive mindset.

Some of the biggest opportunities to learn come when you're willing to take ownership of areas that are still evolving.
