Starting out in technology – Anis’ story

Anis, a digital graduate (engineering) in technology at bp Malaysia, shares how she builds digital products and works on AI solutions.

When people think of technology careers, they often think about coding. For Anis, a digital graduate (engineering) in technology at bp Malaysia, the reality is much broader.

From building digital products and working with stakeholders to supporting AI-powered solutions, she’s learned that solving problems often starts with understanding people as much as technology.

What does your role involve day to day?

A typical day includes meetings with stakeholders, planning products and developing solutions based on business requirements.

Building products takes up around 70% of my time. For me, products can range from Power BI reports to Power Apps. Most of the time, integrations are needed and that's where my learning curve starts to become steep.

Naturally, I enjoy planning products the most. I like thinking about workflows, architecture and data pipelines, and figuring out how different systems connect together.

What project are you most proud of working on?

I’ve been working on a project where we embed the use of AI in tracking bp’s software costs across the entire organisation. Finding ways to track data as close to live as possible helps us detect anomalies and identify opportunities to reduce costs.

What helped you develop your skills as a graduate?

Very, very supportive colleagues and environment. I entered the organization as a graduate, and my experience has been nothing but rewarding.

Building products often means solving challenges that weren't taught at university. That's one reason I've enjoyed working at bp. We learn as we go and there are productivity coaches available when we need expert advice.

Having similar-minded Gen Z peers has been very fun as well.

How have mentoring and teamwork influenced your experience?

During my first year, I worked as a technical project manager and had a discipline mentor, Mike.

He was thoughtful and genuine, and always honest with me. If he saw an opportunity where I could grow, he would help put me there.

That's how I became involved in a Castrol Australia and New Zealand project. I learnt so much from colleagues in Australia and gained experience working with a different team and market.

"A role in technology doesn't necessarily mean you need to be professional at coding, your soft skills are super important too."

What benefits and ways of working have made the biggest difference to you?

Definitely the flexible working arrangements. It's something I've really valued, especially because it helps me balance work with personal responsibilities, including accompanying my mother to physiotherapy appointments.

I'm also very active in bp's business resource groups. One of my favourites is Social Investment Malaysia. We recently organized a mangrove planting activity and it was a great opportunity to meet new people, build soft skills and contribute to the local community.

How has your role connected you to teams beyond your location?

I’ve worked on projects across many regions, collaborating with teams in the US, UK, Egypt and Trinidad & Tobago.

This exposure has helped me feel more confident contributing to technical discussions, manage stakeholder expectations and adjust how I work depending on the team or context.

What's something people often misunderstand about technology careers at bp?

That we don't do scripting all the time – and definitely no hacking into the mainframe like in Hollywood films.

A role in technology doesn't necessarily mean you need to be professional at coding, your soft skills are super important too.

You need to manage stakeholders, understand requirements, solve problems and navigate a complex business environment. There's much more to the role than writing code.

Why do you see bp Malaysia as a place where you can build a long-term career?

I cannot think of any cons: great office, great culture with very understanding colleagues.
